Influenced by founding board member Amiri Baraka’s love of jazz, this year the Lincoln Park Jazzy Soul Series’ Newark Arts Festival edition stars multi-instrumentalist NASIR DICKERSON and acclaimed poet/author MIA X.  Nasir Dickerson, BA, MA, is a Saxophonist, Kora player, African Flutist, composer, producer, recording artist and Emmy Award winning music educator.  He has performed with artist such as, The Legendary Roots Crew, Vocalist Bilal, Quest Love, Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, Vocalist Maysa, Akua Naru, Miki Howard, Jeff Bradshaw, Rappers Beanie Sigel, State Property, Stalley, The legendary Stylistics, The Intruders, the Philadelphia Eagles and more. He has opened for legendary jazz greats, such as Dr. Donald Byrd, Robert “Bootsie” Barnes, Wallace Roney, Jimmy Heath, Cyrus Chestnut Trio, Duane Eubanks, Jymie Merritt, Mickey Roker, Stanley Wilson, Sid Simmons and more. In 2011, Nasir along with his family’s organization, The Universal African Dance and Drum Ensemble, performed in the movie “WARRIOR” by LIONSGATE starring Nick Nolte.

 

Margie “MIA X” Johnson is a writer, poet, mom of three and passionate Newark creative. She hosts the People’s Open Mic, the longest running open mic in the city of Newark, is currently part of the American Voices/Seeing America Exhibit at the Newark Museum of Art and curates Clinton Hill Community Action's ArtsXChange program with NJPAC. She’s a youth developer, teaching artist and community organizer determined to hold space for expression, culture and community. MAIX will be accompanied by maestro J-Read on the violin.
