Re-Seeding: Live Process Performance With Artist in Residence Jill Sigman
In-person
Hosted by PAUL ROBESON GALLERIES, ROBESON CAMPUS CENTER GALLERY
Curated by JILL SIGMAN
ROBESON CAMPUS CENTER 350 DR MLK BLVD, NEWARK NJ 07102
THE EVENT
A rare opportunity for viewers to encounter Jill Sigman as she provides access to the creative process, through the presentation of a work in progress. This Process Performance relates to a large project she is working on whilst Artist In Residence. Her residency is a collaboration between the Robeson Galleries and The Clement A. Price Institute on Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience.
THE PERFORMANCE
Of her performance, Sigman states, “Re-Seeding is a multi-modal project that includes performance, clay work, tea sharing, and reflection about the histories of this land. The project grows out of my relationship to this land as a settler, a granddaughter of immigrant Jewish refugees, and a non-indigenous person born in Brooklyn on occupied Lenape homeland. Re-Seeding asks the questions: how do I live on this land with respect and bring about healing? And how do I make sense of a lineage of grief, genocide, and displacement in a land where I am part of a legacy of colonial trauma?”
Movement by Dan Cole, Jill Sigman, Stacy Lynn Smith
Live drawing by Paula Walters Parker
Ceramics by Jill Sigman.
THE ARTIST
Jill Sigman is a Brooklyn-born interdisciplinary artist and agent of change whose work exists at the intersection of dance, visual art, and social practice. She founded jill sigman/thinkdance in 1998 to think about pressing social issues through the body. In 2016, she founded “Body Politic”, a program of workshops, trainings, and performance laboratories to ask salient political questions somatically. Working with things we cast off such as “garbage” and “weeds”, Sigman helps us to re-imagine our relationships with the natural world and each other in meaningful and empathic ways.
THE RESIDENCY
Paul Robeson Galleries - Artist in Residence Program
PRG believes in supporting artists through as many means possible - exhibitions, programs, publications, and space to actually make the work. Since 2017 PRG has been providing a dedicated residency program for artists and writers, with allocated workspace for creatives. This residency comes with a stipend and opportunities to show/perform/read what has been produced during the residency.
