Don’t Touch My Hair: A Powerful Immersive Experience

The debut of the traveling installation Don’t Touch My Hair was a bold and thought-provoking immersive experience that took visitors on a journey through Black women’s connection with hair and the societal microaggressions tied to it.

Hosted at Harriet Tubman Square, this installation invited participants to walk through a stark, transformative space featuring 3D-printed hands and reflective moments that challenged visitors to confront the complexities of beauty standards and racial identity. Designed by one of Newark Arts’ ArtStart Grant recipients, filmmaker and artist Ayana Morris, the exhibit sparked crucial conversations around race, respect, and the fight for Black women’s autonomy, leaving a lasting impact on all who experienced it.
