Performance by:
Kelly Villalba and Desmond Grant
8PM-9PM
Artist Statement:
“Stand Down” is a time-based piece involving installation, performance, and printmaking. In my performance, I consider the issues that women face under misogynistic and patriarchal expectations. The struggle observed between the body and the object illustrates the pressure placed on women to be stronger, smarter, and better than their male peers, despite being perpetually ignored, mistreated, and silenced. This work reclaims the use of the female nude as the passive object to the creative initiator.

Collateral Damage
33 Washington Street, Newark, NJ 07102
6PM-9PM
Opening Reception: Friday, October 11, 6PM-9PM
Collateral Damage is a sight-specific installation commenting on the caging of children in detention centers in the United States.
Obviously the cage in the center of the room is specific reference to those in which children are being held at detention centers. Surrounding the cage, I have placed dozens of foil "blankets" mimicking those that are given to the children sleeping on concrete floors. Each of the “blankets” has a different physical object that once belonged to a child: a toy, a sock, a dress, a sneaker, or another article of clothing.
All these objects have been donated by children and parents who find it painful to even conceive of children being caged.
Collateral Damage is on view October 8-30...24/7 from street and by appointment.

Performance by:
Kelly Villalba and Desmond Grant
4:30PM-5:30PM
Artist Statement:
“Stand Down” is a time-based piece involving installation, performance, and printmaking. In my performance, I consider the issues that women face under misogynistic and patriarchal expectations. The struggle observed between the body and the object illustrates the pressure placed on women to be stronger, smarter, and better than their male peers, despite being perpetually ignored, mistreated, and silenced. This work reclaims the use of the female nude as the passive object to the creative initiator.

Brick City Collective & Friends: Poetry Celebration!
Express Newark, Paul Robeson Galleries, 54 Halsey Street, 3rd Floor, Newark, NJ 07102
The Newark Arts 2019 theme of "The Year of the Woman" will be an extension of the Brick City Collective readings that are hosted variously throughout the year. We offer a safe space for our audience members and participants to talk poetry but we also dig deeper into the spaces that we are writing in such as the POC and Queer experiences.
With a sensitivity and understanding of the female/ queer body, all members of BCC have work that deals with gender, feminism, and womanism. For the Newark Arts Festival, our performances will be a reading where Brick City Collective, friends, and Newark Arts attendees will have the chance to listen to some of our newest work on these subjects and more! These will be our entry points to discuss and enjoy the spoken art that is poetry.
With 20+ readers, there won't likely be room for an open mic, but still come! We'll do our best to accommodate the audience!

Collateral Damage
33 Washington Street, Newark, NJ 07102
Collateral Damage is a sight-specific installation commenting on the caging of children in detention centers in the United States.
Obviously the cage in the center of the room is specific reference to those in which children are being held at detention centers. Surrounding the cage, I have placed dozens of foil "blankets" mimicking those that are given to the children sleeping on concrete floors. Each of the “blankets” has a different physical object that once belonged to a child: a toy, a sock, a dress, a sneaker, or another article of clothing.
All these objects have been donated by children and parents who find it painful to even conceive of children being caged.
I will be present from 3PM-5PM
Collateral Damage is on view October 8-30 ...24/7 from street and by appointment.

Hetrick-Martin Institute: New Jersey provides supportive services to LGBTQ Youth ages 13-21. With it's main NJ location at 550 Broad St. in Newark, Artist in Residence Barbara Bickart, facilitated the Queer Youth Art Collective to produce the work in this show: "IGNITION" - experimental work in self-portraiture. Generously funded by the Newark Arts ArtStart Grant, HMI: NJ youth members engaged in process-based art-making that explored expression and identity.
Please join us for an Open Studio and bear witness to the work of the LGBTQ youth in Northern New Jersey.
