Sharon Adarlo, local Newark artist and writer, will be showing a small collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures that deal with our sensual perception of the world - phenomenology - via the realistic, artistic rendering of various objects: food, the human body, finely handmade artifacts, etc. As such, the art pieces range in style and medium, from highly technical oil paintings and drawings done in the mold of the Old Masters, stylized portraits of people, to evocative and mysterious shadow boxes.

Designed to initiate young children into the joys of music, while guiding them through their rhythmic, tonal, and physical development through a mix of play, singing, chants, dancing, instrument exploration, and movement. So, get ready to have FUN!

"Being Gladys" will be screened at 10AM. Following there will be a question and answer session. A member of the production team and the Grauer family will be available to answer questions. They will be able to offer perspectives on Gladys Barker Grauer’s history as an advocate for underrepresented people, an advocate for African-American women artists and her impact on Newark's art community.

Mindfulness of Color (Newark Arts - Kids)
Early Learners and their caregivers will explore our Seeing America galleries focusing and reflecting on the artists deliberate of use primary colors. Visitors will then have the opportunity to create their own piece of art in the studio!

The Newark Short Film Awards semi-annual event is presented in partnership with Express Newark and NYC Filmmakers in the historic and redeveloped Hahne & Co., building. Films may be submitted in the categories Comedy, Documentary, Narrative, Web Series. Trophies and prizes will be presented at the Awards Ceremony culminating the Newark Short Film Awards.

The Newark Short Film Awards is designed for those interested and/or working in the filmmaking industry. For Movie Lovers, this is an opportunity to view outstanding shorts films and get rare behind the scenes introductions to the filmmaking process. The day is filled with an informative, lively and entertaining schedule of activities.

Join us for hands-on STEAM*-powered explorations throughout the gardens and greenhouse at the Conservancy's Urban Environmental Center. Brick City Collective will host CavanKerry press poets for a "flow reading" performance.

Each poet will read a poem in response to the poet before them. This spontaneous style of performance is engaging or both the readers and audience!

Girl to Goddess is a workshop for teenage and adolescent girls to inform girls about the importance of self-love, self-acceptance, and self-worth. Reflecting on the collective knowledge about beauty, sex, and relationships from home, the media the music; we will define our self-worth by creating boundaries based on what we love about ourselves and how we want to be treated.

The Newarkive is a living multimedia archive that will allow the sharing of images and stories, of and by Newarks' intergenerational Black communities. We are engaging with Newarkers across the city, inviting them to share the personal narratives and images that illustrate the richness and complexity of the lives we make and communities we build. The Newarkive will also act as a bridge to Newark’s already existing archives, highlighting their rich holdings, encouraging engagement and amplification of the histories they hold.

Artist Statement:

“Stand Down” is a time-based piece involving installation, performance, and printmaking. In my performance, I consider the issues that women face under misogynistic and patriarchal expectations. The struggle observed between the body and the object illustrates the pressure placed on women to be stronger, smarter, and better than their male peers, despite being perpetually ignored, mistreated, and silenced. This work reclaims the use of the female nude as the passive object to the creative initiator.

NEXT STOP ART is a hands on community arts event where families, friends, neighbors, and commuters who use Newark Broad Street Station can enjoy stimulating art from several local artists and entrepreneurs. The day will feature live painting “Cellophane Murals” by Steve Green and Elijah Minton, friends of Pink Dragon Artist Syndicate; “Chalk Talk” an interactive arts project hosted/curated by Vibes After Dark, where community members make their voices heard through the use of chalk art; on the spot screen printing workshop and giveaway with the Newark Print Shop, featuring artwork designed for NJ Transit, by the late Newark artist Jerry Gant; and a “Platform Parklet” by Chambers Design.

NEXT STOP ART is a collaboration between several Urban Essex Coalition for Smart Growth (“UEC”) members including NJ Transit, the City of Newark, ‪La Casa de Don Pedro‬, Pink Dragon Artist Syndicate and is funded in part by Newark Arts ArtStart Grant Program.

Artist Q&A

by the waters is a solo exhibition, taking space to share photographs that document the reminders of home that immigrants carry with them to new lands. This is an ongoing project, please reach out Nene A. Diallo if you would like to participate.

Hair Demo at 2:30PM by Artist Jorina Parson-Slocum, followed by a live performance by Alicia J and pockets of experiences throughout the venue, including a Barbie Box photo booth.

In addition to art, Jerry Gant loved nature & the environment and often drew inspiration from his urban environment. Take a stroll through the Conservancy's gardens where you will be treated to a selection of Jerry's art, including mobiles, sculptures, and paintings. This exhibit is part of HYBRID: An Interactive Experience Fusing the Arts.

The Newark Arts 2019 theme of "The Year of the Woman" will be an extension of the Brick City Collective readings that are hosted variously throughout the year. We offer a safe space for our audience members and participants to talk poetry but we also dig deeper into the spaces that we are writing in such as the POC and Queer experiences.

With a sensitivity and understanding of the female/ queer body, all members of BCC have work that deals with gender, feminism, and womanism. For the Newark Arts Festival, our performances will be a reading where Brick City Collective, friends, and Newark Arts attendees will have the chance to listen to some of our newest work on these subjects and more! These will be our entry points to discuss and enjoy the spoken art that is poetry.

With 20+ readers, there won't likely be room for an open mic, but still come! We'll do our best to accommodate the audience!
