Sharon Adarlo, local Newark artist and writer, will be showing a small collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures that deal with our sensual perception of the world - phenomenology - via the realistic, artistic rendering of various objects: food, the human body, finely handmade artifacts, etc. As such, the art pieces range in style and medium, from highly technical oil paintings and drawings done in the mold of the Old Masters, stylized portraits of people, to evocative and mysterious shadow boxes.

Join Koshin Paley Ellison, Zen teacher, author and psychotherapist, Linda Harrison, CEO & Executive Director, The Newark Museum, and a local artist as they discuss what matters most to them and living an energetic, authentic, loving life. Following the talk, Koshin will be available to sign copies of his book “Wholehearted: Slow Down, Help Out, Wake Up.”

There will be the grand opening of A People to Heal, From 5PM-10PM, which includes never-before-seen paintings, sculptures, videos, photos, and spoken word by Red. “Stand Down” is a time-based piece involving installation, performance, and printmaking. In my performance, I consider the issues that women face under misogynistic and patriarchal expectations. The struggle observed between the body and the object illustrates the pressure placed on women to be stronger, smarter, and better than their male peers, despite being perpetually ignored, mistreated, and silenced. This work reclaims the use of the female nude as the passive object to the creative initiator.

Collateral Damage is a sight-specific installation commenting on the caging of children in detention centers in the United States.

Obviously the cage in the center of the room is specific reference to those in which children are being held at detention centers. Surrounding the cage, I have placed dozens of foil "blankets" mimicking those that are given to the children sleeping on concrete floors. Each of the “blankets” has a different physical object that once belonged to a child: a toy, a sock, a dress, a sneaker, or another article of clothing.

All these objects have been donated by children and parents who find it painful to even conceive of children being caged.

Collateral Damage is on view October 8-30...24/7 from street and by appointment.

The J. Robert and Barbara A. Hillier College of Architecture and Design at NJIT will have an Artist Meet and Greet from 6-8pm during Newark Arts festival Friday evening Gallery Crawl.
