Who is/was Gladys Barker Grauer? Born in Cincinnati in 1923, trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, moved to NYC to make her mark in the world of art, married Solomon Grauer, they moved to Newark to raise their family - and at age 48, she opened the first art gallery in Newark on Bergen Street. From that location, she began to nurture and organize women artists and artists of color. She exhibited locally and internationally, created numerous murals, and continued to make art and curate until age 95. She was a humanist and a political and historical commentator. Gladys Barker Grauer was a force of nature and is responsible for nurturing the next generation of Newark artists, opening doors, breaking through ceilings, and creating the foundation for the surge of visual art in the City of Newark today.
This event is curated by Gallery Aferro, and presented by the Estate of Gladys Barker Grauer, Newark Public Library, Women in Media-Newark, and Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District.
