Curated by M.Gosser.
Opening Reception
Thursday, October 12th, 2017 6PM-9PM
CoAD Gallery at NJIT
367 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd
Regular hours: Monday-Friday, 9:30AM-4:30PM
CoAD Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of Newark native and internationally acclaimed artist Willie Cole. Born in Newark, NJ, Willie Cole is a noted contemporary American sculptor, printer, and conceptual and visual artist. His work uses contexts of postmodern eclecticism, and combines references and appropriation from African and African-American imagery. Finding beauty in the commonplace is one of Willie Cole’s strengths. His ability to rejigger the consumer world around us into something more fantastic creates the illusion that his art springs from the mystical intersection of folk culture, utility, design, contemporary art, and mythology. This exhibition will focus on Willie Cole’s large-scale sculpture/installations which use recycled plastic bottles in creative and expressive ways. There will also be older works on display to illuminate the path Mr. Cole has taken to get to this point in his career.

Pamela Owens: Inverted Architecture
Curated By Adrienne Wheeler

Thursday, October 12, 2017, 9am-8pm
Friday, October 13, 2017, 9am-8pm
Conklin Hall, 175 University Ave 3rd Floor, Newark NJ 07102
Pam Owens is a Newark born and raised artist. She is interested in photography as a way to see with the invisible eye, to experience something beyond a depiction of an object or space to a sensation, an energy contained within a two dimensional plane. The title of the exhibition provides a clue as to her intention. Architecture may be defined as forming a unified, coherent form or structure, but when inverted there is room for something much less concrete. This is the space that Owens occupies with her photos.

Gallery Aferro
73 Market Street, Newark, NJ
September 23rd, 2017 – October 28th, 2017
Duroseau is an interdisciplinary artist addressing America’s uneasy relationship with people of color – one that simultaneously denigrates and adulates black culture. Dominique Duroseau is a Newark-based artist born in Chicago, raised in Haiti. Duroseau attended Kean University where she earned her Master of Arts in Fine Arts with a concentration in studio arts and New Jersey Institute of Technology where she received a B.Arch. in Architecture. Her spoken word pieces, performances, prints and sculptures explore themes of racism, socio-cultural issues, and existential dehumanization; it questions the roles we play in society, highlights the fractures within the Black race, and emphasizes the oft-ignored objectification of women.

Evonne Davis uses an evocative quilt fabric print to create landscapes. Like a text, a landscape can be interpreted, and to be accessed, must be read. The associations and assumptions we work from when interpreting patterns, symbols, and text continue to inform Davis’ works, regardless of the specific media in use. Freeform text works are inspired by the difficulties and urgency of communication. Signed editions of her wall text poem are available in the gift shop.

Artists: Agnes Dejas, Julie Ann Nagle and Jo-El Lopez.
Artist Agnes Deja creates an abstract and conceptual installation that explores environmental consciousness as well as gestural and body memory brought through the expressive exploration of acrylic paint and wire supported by asphalt-infused materials. Jo-El Lopez’s installation consists of one large scale painting inside the larger storefront space that juxtaposes daily human life with the spiritual, and pokes fun at the power of social media. Julie Ann Nagle dazzles and seduces the viewer with sculptures that use archaeological methods for excavating her personal heritage, questioning mythology, beliefs, identity and beauty.

Elevator Music 4
Curated by Jacob Mandel
Elevator Installation, 2nd Floor
Opening Reception
Friday October 13th, 2017 12PM-9PM
Gallery Aferro
73 Market Street, Newark, NJ
September 23rd, 2017 – October 28th, 2017
This new sound piece was composed using a feedback loop and three pitch shifter effects pedals. The signal was produced from one microphone, moving within a space 5 ft X 4 ft X 11 ft which is slightly larger than the typical dimensions of an Otis elevator. The feedback signal rises and falls and then contorts and expands as the spacial dimensions change. This repetitive ascension/descension in tone imitates the work-a-day function of the elevator, while the chaotic aberrations in tone imitate the inherent deviations that inevitably occur. These deviations are due to wear and tear, mechanical failure, human interaction, weather conditions, natural disasters and any number of random accidents. The repetition of service is where we place our unspoken faith every time we step into an elevator.

“Waking Up With John On A Friday”
How often do we catch a glimpse of our reflections in the mirror and stop to look at ourselves and wonder what it’d be like to see ourselves, outside of ourselves? Introspection is typically the examination of our mind, but what about our behaviors? If someone offered us the chance to see who we are in our most vulnerable state would we take it? When a person starts their day, it’s a very personal, routine that sets the tone for their day. I wanted to explore this experience with my subjects.
