Born in Caracas, Venezuela and raised here in the U.S., more specifically Miami and Memphis, Sebastian is an amalgamation of both worlds. Currently he uses acrylic and oil on canvas and prefers palette knives. His work is very active, energetic, and brash. This Pop Art exhibition is a modern interpretation of iconic images laced with street, abstract, and graffiti elements.  Sebastian Ferreria’s work is on view at Fownders Gallery in the University Heights District.

The Atrium, located inside the oldest public arts high school in the country, is proud to present an exhibition of Newark students and teachers. This opening will include a student installation that resembles a large chess set called “Your Move”. It is made up of 2d and 3d artwork of over 50 students. The theme represents the good and bad choices we make in life. Students will also be playing chess around the installation and students will also present poetry.

The 16th Annual Open Doors Citywide Arts Festival kicks off with an exciting solo exhibit from internationally renowned abstract expressionist Danny Simmons, entitled “disRUPT: Newark”.
Curated by Noah Kane-Smalls, the exhibit title is inspired by the intersection of tech / art / social impact.
Simmons’ work has been exhibited in Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn Museum, Chase Manhattan Bank, Deutsche Bank, Schomburg Center for Black Culture, The Smithsonian, the United Nations, the African American Museum of Philadelphia, and more.

Art & Artifacts of Newark is proud to the present the opening reception of “When a Church Dies v2.0”, a continuation of the existing exhibit about the recently demolished Queen of Angels church with new works represented.

Duroseau is an interdisciplinary artist addressing America’s uneasy relationship with people of color – one that simultaneously denigrates and adulates black culture. Dominique Duroseau is a Newark-based artist born in Chicago, raised in Haiti. Duroseau attended Kean University where she earned her Master of Arts in Fine Arts with a concentration in studio arts and New Jersey Institute of Technology where she received a B.Arch. in Architecture. Her spoken word pieces, performances, prints and sculptures explore themes of racism, socio-cultural issues, and existential dehumanization; it questions the roles we play in society, highlights the fractures within the Black race, and emphasizes the oft-ignored objectification of women.

Gallery Aferro’s Art Shop has curated artist features which rotate regularly as well as a selection of art, zines, publications, and handmade objects on sale. All profits from sales supports artists and Gallery Aferro’s nonprofit programming.

Gallery Aferro’s Community Book Room, containing over 2000 books, magazine, journals, and other publications, with couches and board games for the public to enjoy.

Index Art Center invites you to attend the Opening Reception of the exhibit “Under the Same Sun: Democratic Spaces” with an evening of music performance by David Rothenberg. “Under the Same Sun: Democratic Spaces” presents abstract and conceptual sculptures by Agnes Deja and Katherine Jackson. Both Deja and Jackson combine traditional art-making techniques with materials common to the urban scene, such as asphalt (Deja), and LED technology (Jackson). The intersection of abstract imagery and such contemporary mediums provides a framework in which to explore inclusive spaces: from the environment at large, to city streets, public parks, and art itself.

Sterling Brown is one of the nation’s most prolific poster artists, and the top in demand on the African American art circuit. His creations, like the wildly popular Spiritual Nap and Looking Good Cooking series, result in instant recognition. In addition to being a painter, Sterling Brown is also a sculptor. Sterling was honored as the artist chosen to create and design a 911 Statue to the fallen firefighters of the New York City Fire Department. His creation marking the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. The Africana Institute is spending the year reflecting on the African woman and their contributions to the struggles, artistry and beauty of the African journey.

Evonne Davis uses an evocative quilt fabric print to create landscapes. Like a text, a landscape can be interpreted, and to be accessed, must be read.  The associations and assumptions we work from when interpreting patterns, symbols, and text continue to inform Davis’ works, regardless of the specific media in use.  Freeform text works are inspired by the difficulties and urgency of communication. Signed editions of her wall text poem are available in the gift shop.

Artist Agnes Deja creates an abstract and conceptual installation that explores environmental consciousness as well as gestural and body memory brought through the expressive exploration of acrylic paint and wire supported by asphalt-infused materials. Jo-El Lopez’s installation consists of one large scale painting inside the larger storefront space that juxtaposes daily human life with the spiritual, and pokes fun at the power of social media. Julie Ann Nagle dazzles and seduces the viewer with sculptures that use archaeological methods for excavating her personal heritage, questioning mythology, beliefs, identity and beauty.

Gregg Banks was born and raised in Newark, NJ, holds an Associates Degree in the arts from Essex County College and is founder of Walls of Life, a leading mural organization in the City of Newark. Banks, a frequent muralist with Yendor Productions, has completed over 10 murals around the City of Newark including “Visions Uplifted” on Seymour Avenue and Clinton Avenue and “Tribute to Obama” on Clinton Avenue and Irvine Turner Blvd. Banks can be found hosting The Gregg Banks Show at Military Park, Newark, NJ and is a vital part of the Newark public arts scene. The People’s Group Show will be curated by Gregg Banks and include other artists such as James Bell, expert wood worker and more.

NCS, in partnership with the Newark Youth Court, will work with local youth to create pieces of art reflective of the community’s attitudes towards community justice. Members of the Newark Youth Court, along with respondents of the program, will work with established local artist Malik Whitaker. Members and respondents are young people committed to promoting youth development and giving back to the communities harmed by youth transgressions. Art will reflect their work giving kids second chances and repairing harm done to neighborhoods. Recipient of the Newark Arts 2017 ArtStart Grant Program.

We are a multimedia space made possible by the collaborative efforts of designer Sindy Snchz (sindysnchz.com) and performance artist Ole Lie Vandal (olelievandal.com). With this planned 24/7 internet channel, vandalhaus.com, we hope to serve as a medium to feature, produce and promote local arts & culture. We love Newark and are proud to call it our home, it would be our pleasure to open our doors to our neighbors and community. Duron Jackson: The Missing promises to be one of the most important art exhibitions in Newark’s history.  The timely and relative subject matter – mass incarceration – is of both local and national consequence. Duron Jackson is an acclaimed multi-disciplinary artist whose work focuses on social and political histories in relation to mass incarceration and the constructions of criminality in the United States.

Come see the artwork of the students in our aftercare program and the Y on Wheels van as part of Open Doors! There will be art and other creative workshops for event participants.  We seek to expose our aftercare students to art in a meaningful way, and the possibility of it being a viable and sustainable career.  We also want to expose members of our community to free art and creative workshops to allow them to flex their creative muscles and to see and utilize art as an adaptive coping mechanism or self-care method. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Kern Bruce is a mixed media and digital artist. His work revolves around people of the African diaspora, colonialism and modern day racism within a political and historical context. He began drawing and painting at age 3, and later attended the Newark Community School of the Arts and Newark Arts High in Newark, New Jersey. He uses drawing and painting as a means to channel and foster his creativity while delivering messages of hope and love. His drawings and paintings consist of literal and abstract interpretations of both the challenges and the grace of being black in America. Kern’s works are included in private collections throughout the country. He holds an undergraduate degree in Art Semiotics and Modern Culture and Media from Brown University and a Master’s of Advertising from Boston University. Most recently Kern has shown work at Art in the Atrium, Solos Project House, and Gallery Aferro. He is 2015 / 2016 muralist for Newark Mayor Ras Baraka Model Neighborhood 2015 initiative.

“Records at Play: The Institute of Jazz Studies @50” is a collection of historical and cultural artifacts from the archives of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University-Newark. Includes objects, documents, textiles, sound, video, and interactive media. “Records at Play: The Institute of Jazz Studies @50” is the first time the IJS has exhibited so many of its treasures at once.  Although they represent only a small fraction of the Institute’s collections, the artifacts, documents, and sound recordings in this exhibit provide a record of IJS history and the music at its core.

“Just Seeds: Migration Now!”  Justseeds want to re-imagine migration as an inevitability, as a social practice that is not to be prevented but to be related to, like weather. All migration starts with social relationships. Migration is fundamentally about our right to move freely across planet Earth, in search of our fullest and best selves.  Justseeds is a loose print collective that operates as a unified collaboration of similarly minded printmakers who believe in the transformative power of personal expression in concert with collective action.  This exhibition is constituted by one portfolio they produced on the theme of migration.

Express Newark Community Media Center Artists in Residence, LeRon Lee and Matt Williams, will be screening UGLY: the short film written and directed by LeRon Lee, and seen at the Cannes International Film Festival and on HBO, Saturday Oct 14 at 2pm, and then another short film following. Filmmakers will be on hand for question and answer period. Light refreshments provided.

Power In Paint is a once in a lifetime opportunity to collect original works of art from some of the nations leading artists, all being sold for one low price.  Special host committee includes Danny Simmons, Victor Davson, Russell Simmons, native Newarker and retired NBA Player Anthony Avent, Adenah Bayoh, A. Printers in Residence VI showcases the artwork created by our Spring resident artists Ana Benaroya, Daniel Drennan ElAwar, and Beth Sheehan. For six months, these artists have had unlimited access to Newark Print Shop facilities to explore and engage with printmaking processes in order to expand their artistic practice. In exchange, residents attend our weekly open studio Print Club to assist participants and first time printers.

The mission of GlassRoots is to ignite and build the creative and economic vitality of greater Newark, with a focus on under-served youth and young adults, through the transformative power of the glass art experience.  GlassRoots has been working in the Newark community since 2001 sharing the glass art experience. It has been a valuable resource for area youth to express themselves. It would be great to continue to share GlassRoots at OpenDoors again this year.

Pam Owens is a Newark born and raised artist. She is interested in photography as a way to see with the invisible eye, to experience something beyond a depiction of an object or space to a sensation, an energy contained within a two dimensional plane.  The title of the exhibition provides a clue as to her intention.  Architecture may be defined as forming a unified, coherent form or structure, but when inverted there is room for something much less concrete.  This is the space that Owens occupies with her photos.

“Resistance Across Time” is a selection of posters from Interference Archive meant to remind viewers of the long history of social movements led by and in support of women’s rights, LGBTQ rights and the rights and safety of people of color. Interference Archive is an all-volunteer run community archive in Brooklyn, NY. The mission of Interference Archive is to explore the relationship between cultural production and social movements.

His work examines and celebrates the lineage of tribes and tribal culture.  Golding’s new work sheds light on the tribes of this region, highlighting points of beauty within tradition and ethos.  Jay Golding lives and works in Essex County, New Jersey.

How often do we catch a glimpse of our reflections in the mirror and stop to look at ourselves and wonder what it’d be like to see ourselves, outside of ourselves? Introspection is typically the examination of our mind, but what about our behaviors? If someone offered us the chance to see who we are in our most vulnerable state would we take it? When a person starts their day, it’s a very personal, routine that sets the tone for their day. I wanted to explore this experience with my subjects.

Celebrated playwright Dr. Ntozake Shange’s famous choreopoem, for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, will be the inspiration for curator Peter (Souleo) Wright’s exhibition. “i found god in myself: a celebration of Dr. Ntozake Shange’s, for colored girls.” The exhibit, which debuted in 2014 at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Long Gallery Harlem and La Maison d’Art, honors Dr. Shange through 10 commissioned artworks by nationally acclaimed artists, including Renee Cox, Rafia Santana, Pamela Council, Alexandria Smith and Danny Simmons. Each work highlights issues impacting the lives of women of color, touching on themes in Dr. Shange’s poems like sexuality, race, sisterhood, violence and self-love.    Artists include Amber Robles-Gordon, Beau McCall, Dianne Smith, Kathleen Granados, Kimberly Mayhorn, Margaret Rose Vendryes, Melissa Calderón, Michael Paul Britto, Pamela Council, and Uday K. Dhar.  Dr. Shange, an acclaimed writer, educator and performer/director, will appear at the Saturday opening.

Experience “Gantalism in the Gardens” of Newark Conservancy during Open Doors 2017.  Gant attended West Side High School and studied at Essex County College and the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. Gant was active in the 1980s graffiti scene in New York City. Influenced by African-American artists like filmmaker Spike Lee, in the early 1990s, Gant started performing spoken word in New York City and Newark. Gant creates artistic works textile and clothing design, metal sculpture, woodcarving, and wall murals. Gant seeks to reflects spirit and community of Newark, while challenging stereotypes and conventional thinking. He has worked on art projects inside and often outside the “white-cube” in an effort to expand the role art can play in urban spaces. Gant has worked on murals across every ward in Newark. He has also been commissioned to create a number of public sculptures. Gant’s murals can be seen in New York City, Boston, London, and Newark. He currently lives and works in Newark.

Lyle Omolayo is part of tri-lingual rap duo Negros Americanos combined that has performed 500+ shows in the USA, Brazil, Panama, Montreal, and Costa Rica. A flier has been sent out and can be forwarded as well. Kaila Boulware and X Ray Visions will be capturing the event. “Flippin Tables” by Lyle Omolayo is a 10 track album that features Newark’s own J Read and Linden’s Dana From Upstairs. With production from Vanilla, IV the Polymath, and Loot Fatig, “Flippin Tables” is a smooth and jazzy yet lyrically harsh arrangement of songs with the theme of rebellion. We’ll have performances from Lyle Omolayo of tri-lingual rap duo Negros Americanos, C Rayz Walz former Definitive Jux artist and underground legend, Def Poetry Jam poet Regtuiniah, Nia Waqiah and Bee Sunny, and East Orange’s Public Warfare.  Lyle Omolayo will be performing new original songs from this project. www.NegrosAmericanosWorldwide.com

Trilogy: An Opera Company will artfully and compassionately deal with these two men and Margaret Washington, placed between them, to make peace. In there quest for freedom and intellectual progress, these two thinking giants struggle to lead a group of people. Bianca Allen, Artist/Ceramic Sculpture
A recent graduate of William Paterson with a fine arts degree and a concentration in ceramic sculpture, Bianca Allen’s “Mother” (Elephant Head) and “Ying Yang (Death of Roses) will be on display at Open Doors.  Her work are interpretations on how she views and processes the human body and nature.

Originating from Orange, New Jersey, Naeema’s artistic style has become an eclectic mixture of Caribbean flair and tri-state attitude. A self-taught photographer with a captivating eye, urban environments, natural landscapes, and candid moments comprise her portfolio. She uses photography to document her feelings and thoughts about the natural and built environment.
Juan Ramiro Torres, Artist/Painter
Juan Ramiro Torres was born in Lima Peru and has lived in the United States since 1984. He graduated from Parsons School of Design (NY) in 1991, since then he has worked as Art Director of many newspapers. His work was exhibited as part of the Newark 350 Celebration at the City Hall in 2016.  He currently works as fine artist, art teacher, graphic designer and journalist. His artwork has been exhibited in major events and galleries in the United States and other countries (Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Dominican Republic, New Zealand, Italy and France). He has been recognized with numerous honors and awards.
Sue Ward, Artist/Mixed Media
This series of mixed media stems from a complex concept and complex process. The end result is a simple visual of Love & Violence as it rests in an artificial landscape. Can we have one without the other – what is manufactured and what occurs naturally? Are the two one in the same? She has exhibited at Open Doors, Jersey City Theater Center, JCAST Pop Up Gallery, Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, Oualie Art, and the Hamilton Street Gallery.

Co-curated by Lillian Ribeiro and Daniel Joseph Wiley #WhoIsTheRenaissanceFor? will explore Newark’s past, present, and future by artists and long time residents who are experiencing development and displacement in their neighborhoods known as gentrification. CoCurated by lifelong Newarkers, artists, and activists, Lilly Ribeiro and Daniel Joseph Wiley. This exhibition also features artworks by Jo Sie Barreiro, Lisa Conrad, Christine Vidal DaCruz, Jackson D. Almeida, Kevin Darmanie, Steve Green, Matthew Gosser, Sheena Ohh, Luisa F. Pinzon Romero, Antonio Rendeiro, Malik Whitaker, Danielle Scott, Kortez Robinson, Vanessa Velez, Anker West.

Malik Hardaway-Whitaker was born and raised in Newark, NJ.  Malik is most famous for his “Brick City Project”, a collection of bricks with painted scenes of Newark, which he’s displayed in many galleries and exhibitions around Newark, Jersey City and NYC. As a Newark born artist, the trials and tribulations of living in the inner city has helped to shape Malik’s passion and appreciation for life.

Animodules™ are the Official Peace Ambassadors of Newark. They have created a platform to express social advocacy by including and honoring the children and youth of Newark in the cultural landscape of the city.  The exhibition will be Animodules™ as they relate to social activism and advocacy. We plan to extend the exhibition to the Hallways of Gateway One. We will also have mini-artist created Animodules for display and sale.

We are pleased to announce that the theme of the 5th Ironbound Multi-Cultural Festival is “in Black and White” to celebrate the Multicultural Traditions and Culture in the City of Newark. Using photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed media, we seek artistic interpretations by both professional and amateur artists that capture the in Black and White Art expression.  The Winners of the event will receive a special Award.  This event will present over 100 artists representing approximately 25 countries.

Nell Painter (the painter formerly known as the historian Nell Irvin Painter, author of The History of White People, Sojourner Truth, A Life, A Symbol, and Creating Black Americans and the Edwards Professor of American History, Emerita, Princeton University) lives and works in Newark, New Jersey. Her work carries discursive as well as visual meaning, and she makes it in my characteristic manual + digital process. Using found images and digital manipulation; she reconfigures the past and revision herself through self-portraits.

“Brick City Urban Watercolor Scapes (BCUWS) is a collaborative series between photographer and visual artist. These digitally enhanced images from international photographer Luisa Pinzon are silk screen printed and watercolor painted by painter and illustrator Malik Whitaker. This new series highlights the vibrant colors and diversity of Newark, NJ. The artist portray a variety of landmark locations around the city revitalized by splashes of bright water color washes. Each piece brings a entirely new perspective to an unseen community.

PERSONA features some of Milan’s well known large-scale mixed media drawings from A Series of Inspiring Women (2012- 2016) and various portraits that portray androgyny, queerness, and the beauty of the ambiguous. More info: www.projectforemptyspace.org/wardell-milan-persona/

Tailoring (needle trades) in the United States have historically provided employment/entrepreneurial opportunities for immigrants. Highlighting the experiences of Jews and other immigrant/ethnic groups in the tailoring occupation, this exhibit will present the work of several artists working with textiles/fabric, as well as a re-creation of a typical tailor shop from the 1940s-50s. In addition, there will be film screenings and a panel discussion on the tailoring trades.  Artists: Paula Borenstein, Jody Leight, Eleta Caldwell, Joanne Leone, Larry Dell and Diana Savona.
